2016 Kia Optima

When you know you have a great thing, you can’t wait to show the world.  That must have been the logic behind Kia deciding not to wait until the 2015 New York Auto Show to give us a sneak peek behind the curtain and show us the 2016 Kia Optima.

There appears to be subtle changes to the front of the latest offering as the shape of the headlights and other features have been slightly offered.  They did keep the bold tiger nose grille which is one of my favorite designs.  Along with the vertical fog lights make the front menacing to say the least.  They also have LED taillights with an integrated diffuser and a pair of heavy duty oval exhausts to round out the back.

Under the hood, Kia will continue to offer a standard, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder, as well as an optional 2.0-liter, turbo charged four-cylinder. Power for the engine will be 185 hp and 178 lb-ft, and the 2.0T will be 247 hp and 260 lb.-ft. Both engines have been retuned for fuel economy.  The car company will also offer a 1.6 liter turbocharged four cylinder accompanied with the company’s first seven speed dual clutch transmission.  This produced 178 hp and 19g lb. ft. of torque.  Kia continues to improve upon an already great product.  I can’t wait to sit behind the wheel of this one.

Every year the car enthusiasts’ publication, MotorTrend conducts “The Big Test.”  The Big Test is a rigorous comparison of vehicles within each segment to determine a clear 1st place winner.  So far this year MotorTrend has conducted two big tests.  The June issue featured the comparisons between full-size sedans and this month’s issue pits compact cars against each other.

JUNE TEST: FULL-SIZE SEDANS

The first test had heavy hitters squaring off against each other, the Kia Cadenza, Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala, and the Chrysler 300.

The Toyota Avalon was the winner in 2012, but it didn’t have the Cadenza to go up against last year.  This year’s test had the experts at MotorTrend pleasantly surprised at Kia’s new luxurious sedan.  The Cadenza amazed with its sleek styling, roominess, amazingly smooth ride, and array of luxury features that the other vehicles in the segment just don’t offer.

Yet despite all of the amazing features the Cadenza offers, the low price-tag prompted MotorTrend’s experts to proclaim the Cadenza as the best and biggest bang for your buck as they ushered it into first place glory.

JULY TEST: COMPACT CARS

Compact cars have been steadily climbing in popularity these past few years as consumers really enjoy the reprieve from the gas pumps.  In the past, compact cars were geared more towards performance, but today’s consumer doesn’t just want their compact car to be fun to drive, they want efficiency, value, features, and safety.  With these things in mind, MotorTrend began its Big Test.

The contenders were the Kia Forte, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, Dodge Dart, and Mazda 3.  The Mazda 3 won 1st place last year, but MotorTrend experts noted they weren’t really grading on overall value like they did this year and when it came to efficiency and features the Mazda 3 just couldn’t hold a candle to the Forte.

The 2014 Kia Forte wowed the judges as it combined all of the standards together into a perfect blend of awesomeness.  The great performance, fuel efficiency, low pricing, and an endless list of exclusive features propelled the Kia Forte into 1st place glory.
